Named because the church is located near "the falls" of the Potomac River. The original church building was constructed in 1734 just south of the current building. The current church building was designed by Colonel James Wren andconstruction began in 1767 and ended in 1769. George Washington served as church warden and vestryman. During the Civil War, The Falls Church served as a hospital for the wounded and later as a stable. After the war, the federal government compensated the church by repairing damages caused by its use.
