Glenn Dale United Methodist Church was formed in 1971 when the congregation of Perkins Memorial Church, an offshoot of Pleasant Grove Meeting House (q.v), merged with the African-American congregation of nearby Dorsey Chapel (q.v.). In 1861, several families left Pleasant Grove to build a new house of worship on a donated acre of Perkins farm in the railroad town of Glennville (now Glenn Dale). In 1965, the congregation outgrew the one-room “church in the wildwood” and built the present brick church down the hill from Perkins Chapel. That same year the building was dedicated as Perkins Memorial (q.v.). The variant name Perkins Memorial Church was collected during the initial data compilation (Phase I) from the 1:24,000 scale topographic maps of the U.S. Geological Survey.
